QUANTO SPLENDE QUESTO NERO
Amerighi, Marco
A haunting duet: the life of expressionist painter Lorenzo Viani—who painted only society’s outcasts in black—and the later admirer who risks everything to rescue his memory.
Born in 1882 in a fisherman's cottage in Viareggio, Lorenzo Viani rises from poverty to become Italy’s first Expressionist, painting at a barber’s counter, along the Seine, in First World War trenches and in exile—all while selling nothing and painting only the outcast in black. Ninety years later, Enrico roams Viareggio seeking Viani’s work; not a dealer or critic, he is a solitary custodian whose devotion draws him toward the painter’s fate. Marco Amerighi tells a compact, lyrical portrait of a city and a century, and of art that preserves the forgotten.
Marco Amerighi was born in Pisa in 1982. His debut, Le nostre ore contante (Mondadori, 2018), won the Premio Bagutta opera prima, was longlisted for Prix Marco Polo Venise (2019), and shortlisted for Prix Paul Valéry du roman européen; Randagi (Bollati Boringhieri, 2021) was shortlisted for the Premio Strega.
