HUMAN NATURE

How The Human Body Shapes Human Experience

by Baer, DrakeProffitt, Dennis

Proffitt and Baer show that the body leads, and actions like walking, touching, and grasping impact the way we learn, and our social relationships. Mixing science and narrative, HUMAN NATURE includes stories ranging from the sports arena, to stock market traders at work, to infants learning to walk, to human bipedal origins, and is sure to resonate widely as an accessible work of science writing.

Could the secret to improving children's test scores lie in increasing visual and physical elements of learning? Could one learn to dribble like Steph Curry by understanding the brain/body connection? Might the physical and visual elements of VR finally be harnessed to provide some relief from PTSD? The answers can be explained in "embodied cognition," the growing field pioneered by Dr. Dennis Proffitt with nearly 40 years of research. HUMAN NATURE: How the Human Body Shapes Human Experience, written with co-writer Drake Baer, will be the first book to outline Proffitt's view of neuroscience in the context of real-world ramifications.

Proffitt posits that the mind and body may be far more intimately and even differently linked than previously believed, and challenges the generally accepted understanding of the world as static reality. He has examined how each person's experience in the physical world is different and everyone has their own unique reality, influenced in part by physical capability. (This explains why hills look steeper to those in poorer physical health, but less steep when standing next to a loved one.) The principles of embodied cognition he believes are universally relevant for understanding what makes us each tick, the nefarious forces such as racism and bias in our social world, and can lead us to answers for living a healthier, more conscious, and compassionate life.

In his almost forty-year tenure at the University of Virginia, Dennis "Denny" Proffitt has published over 200 academic papers and has been continuously funded for research by a plethora of national institutes. His co-writer Drake Baer, who has held senior writing positions at New York Magazine and Business Insider, is the director of the NeuroLeadership Institute (NLI), a science-based management consultancy that does brain-based consulting and produces international leadership events for C-Suite executives. Among a wide range of possible endorsers are Bill Gates, Daniel Kahneman, and Steph Curry.
